Eric joined the Royal Navy on 17 April 1925 as a rating of Boy 2nd Class. In 1927 he became n Ordinary Seaman (Service Number J 113661) and signed up (called then Date and period of engagement) 15th May 1927  for 12 years

Eric's Port Division was at Chatham

Eric then signed up again in 3rd February 1938 (called then period of re-engagement)  to complete for pension.

A blank period here after 01.10.1941 ( HMs/m Tempest sunk 13th February 1942 at about 1.00pm) no records until 14th September 1947. This was primarily due to officers and ratings from the Writers Branch being seconded to more pressing duties i.e. the war effort. His record continues as follows:

While out on a routine training exercise, Eric suffered from the effects commonly known as 'The Bends' while under water.  Luckily for Eric, he realised what the symptoms were and immediately informed the Captain.  The Captain radioed to shore the problem and returned to base above water where Eric went ashore.

The Captain the immediately turned around and headed out again to sea to continue training.

Eric was then pensioned to shore on 14th May 1949 (where he joined Her Majesty's Coastguards).
