Eric
Campbell and his wife, Evelyn arrived at the coastguard station in
Newbiggin-By-The-Sea for duty on 2nd May 1949. The house - No. 5 Ocean
View, (now a private property) was Government owned and charged the
occupants a rent. The picture (on left) was taken in
1949, the Coastguard's House can be seen next door to the Station
officer's house by the flag pole outside (just
left of centre). Also in the picture, there is a tractor and
trailer on the beach - possibly waiting for a local fishing boat to
return. On the left of the picture is part of the Promenade and
was one of three promenades sited along the beach.
A Lookout hut was built alongside the flag pole during 1950 - right
of the pole. This house and lookout was used in the television
series "Close and True" in the fourth episode - only there was
a white 'dome' on the roof!
As to be expected, there are superb views
over-looking the bay, thankfully, although much has changed - these views are still there! .
